Liisa Cheshire, MSW, RSW

Liisa Cheshire’s social work career began in 1994 in Ontario. Liisa worked in child welfare in Ontario, British Columbia, and Manitoba. Since moving to Manitoba in 1998 Liisa has worked in a wide variety of roles including quality assurance and leadership positions. In 2015, Liisa joined the Manitoba College of Social Workers (MCSW). Since that time Liisa has spent time discussing ethical dilemmas with members, listening to feedback from members regarding Continuing Competence needs and assisting members of the public with questions related to the MCSW Complaints process. Liisa has been in the role of Manager of Regulatory Practice since 2017 with primary responsibility for the coordination of the complaints process.

Vicki Verge, MSW, RSW

Vicki Verge, MSW, RSW Vicki Verge’s tenure as a Social Worker started in 1992 when she became employed with Winnipeg Child and Family Services after obtaining an Honors Bachelor of Social Work degree from Lakehead University. In 2004, she completed her Master of Social Work degree. Her thesis focused on the importance of the client-worker relationship in a child welfare setting. After achieving her MSW at the University of Manitoba, Vicki left her role as a Program Director in child welfare for a career in healthcare. At the Health Authority, she worked as a Community Team Manager. In this role, she was a leader of diverse interdisciplinary teams including doctors, nurses, mental health practitioners, community development and home care professionals. In 2012, Vicki became the Regional Director of Social Work. In this position, she was responsible for providing leadership and direction for the provision of Social Work services across the Health region continuum (which included acute care, long term care and community programming). In addition to this role, Vicki was responsible for the direct management of a team of medical Social Workers and a team of Spiritual Health specialists in an acute care hospital at an integrated health and social services campus. Vicki was the President of the Manitoba College of Social Workers (MCSW) Board of Directors and has volunteered on various committees such as the College’s Continuing Competence Committee. In 2021 Vicki joined the University of Manitoba Faculty of Social Work where she is currently an instructor and Field Education Liaison. Additionally, Vicki is a part time Manager of Regulatory Practice for the Manitoba college of Social Workers.

Social workers in private practice experience unique challenges and rewards.  Awareness of the many requirements of private practice will assist social workers to determine if private practice is a fit for them.  For those who choose private practice, this knowledge will help them to be successful and to provide the best possible services to their clients.    

Webinar Objectives 

1) To inform participants about the requirements of private practitioners with reference to the Code of Ethics, the MCSW Standards of Practice and the NASW, ASWB, CSWE and CSWA Technology in Social Work Practice Standards.
2) To provide tips and advice for those considering entering private practice and those already established in private practice
3) To provide participants with information about private practice from the perspective of clients, and regulators.
