Shanaya Fischer (she/her)

Shanaya holds a BA in Psychology and an MA in Social Justice and Human Rights. She is Cree from Cowessess First Nations and is the granddaughter of a residential school survivor. She resides in Mohkinstsis, colonially known as Calgary, Alberta. She is passionate about basic income as a poverty-reduction strategy, and has a special interest in the intersection between poverty and child welfare investigations.

 

Manpinder Dhillon (he/him)

Based in Winnipeg on Treaty 1 Territory, Manpinder Dhillon (he/him) is the Settlement Coordinator with Seven Oaks Immigrant Services in the Seven Oaks School Division working with newcomers. Manpinder graduated from the Maples Met School, a Big Picture Learning, a project and internship-based high school in the Seven Oaks School Division and is currently a student at the University of Winnipeg. Manpinder serves as a Director on the Steering Committee for the Basic Income Canada Youth Network (BICYN) and is a past speaker at TedxMaplesMetSchool.

Description

BI 101 is an accessible introduction into the world of basic income and what its implementation could mean for youth across what is colonially known as Canada and beyond. Our series is designed to provide accessible insights and spark discussions on this important topic.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand key concepts related to basic income, the history and context of basic income pilots in Canada, and the evidence from Manitoba and Ontario basic income experiments.
  • Explore the connections between basic income advocacy and core social work values. 
  • Consider the impacts of basic income in a variety of social work contexts.
