Elizabeth Sheppard Hewitt MSW, RSW

Elizabeth is the Past Co-Editor of the journal Canadian Social Work, and the recipient of the NLASW 2019 Pride in the Profession Award. She is a contributing author of a chapter addressing the challenges of differentiating depression and grief with clients in crisis in the upcoming Routledge Publication New Techniques of Grief Therapy: Bereavement and Beyond. The owner of Elizabeth Sheppard Hewitt Counselling, she is also a social worker at Terrace Clinic, an adult outpatient mental health therapy clinic with Eastern Health in St. John’s, NL.

Elizabeth received both her BSW (1992) and MSW (1998) from Memorial University and has a keen appreciation for research as an opportunity to facilitate positive change. In her almost 28 years as a clinician, she has been fortunate to work within the justice, medical, rehabilitative medicine and mental health systems in Toronto, Halifax, Corner Brook and St. John’s, NL

Elizabeth believes that the diversity of her clinical experience has broadened her appreciation for the many variables impacting a client’s presentation in treatment, and that understanding how these variables intersect significantly impacts treatment success. She specializes in treating multi-problem clients experiencing complicated grief, depression, clinical anger and trauma.

Elizabeth is married to a social worker who specializes in addictions and is the mother to two teen aged boys who sometimes need reminding that mom actually knows a few things. She is delighted to present on this topic.

Description

Grief and loss can be a challenging treatment area. Understanding the difference between significant but normal distress and the diagnostic labels of depression and complicated grief can be complex. Likewise, coping with major life transitions can be devastating and result in depression and grief.

This webinar aims to help social workers in any area of practice address the clinical distinctions between depression, normative grief, and complicated grief and understand how other transitional losses might contribute to low mood. Upon conclusion the Attendee should be able to:

  1. Feel confident in determining if their client is exhibiting symptoms of depression, and/or normative grief or complicated grief.
  2. Recognize the impact of transitional losses such as relationship loss, addiction, retirement, and chronic health issues on the client’s resilience and ability to cope.
  3. Have a greater understanding of treatment considerations and therapeutic approaches in dealing with these challenging issues.
