The Newfoundland and Labrador College of Social Workers (NLCSW) is pleased to announce that the recipient of the Canadian Association of Social Workers Distinguished Service Award for 2024 is Kimberley (Kim) Kelly.
Throughout the past twenty years, Kimberley has exemplified the core values of the social work profession dedicating her professional and volunteer activities to serving humanity. Kim’s social work journey has led her primarily to the field of education and supporting post-secondary students. Regardless of her position title, Kim is a proud registered social worker who takes every opportunity to be a strong advocate for this profession. Her most recent position as Student Services Co-ordinator with the Memorial University School of Social Work focused on the provision of quality services that enhanced the educational experiences of students. Kim also contributed to educational policies to minimize barriers for social work students and applicants.
Throughout her social work career at Memorial University, Kim strived to advance social justice and serve humanity through her extensive involvements. Examples include focusing on increasing food security and sustainability as co-creator of the Memorial University Community Garden and co-chairing a Habitat for Humanity build which received the Canadian Council for the Advancement of Education Gold Medal for Best Community Outreach Program in Canada. Kim also created a program called “Make Midterm Matter” which continues to provide opportunities for university students to use their midterm break to engage in a relevant social action initiative. She has also volunteered with the NL College of Social Workers for over twelve years.
Kim’s influence has been monumental in the support of individuals whose loved ones died by suicide and more broadly in the area of suicide postvention. She has been co-organizing an annual December vigil which has grown from a handful of people in her home community to an online event for family and friends to attend from various parts of the country.
Kim’s vision and innovation has led to her being the recipient of several awards that have recognized her skills of leadership, her outstanding contributions to student life, community service, innovative programs, and volunteerism. Her dedication and commitment to social work and the values of this profession means that she is an ideal recipient of the CASW Distinguished Service Award.
