Joan Davis-Whelan

President

Canadian Association of Social Workers

Joan is a graduate of Memorial University, completing her Bachelor of Arts in Political Science in 1979, and her Bachelor of Social Work in 1981. She completed her Master of Social Work in 1992. She has certificates in Discharge Planning, Leadership Development, Quality Management and Ethics. Well known in the Social Work community, Joan has experience in clinical practice including Adult and Child Mental Health and Addictions, Family Violence, Oncology, Palliative Care, Dermatology, Medicine, Nephrology, Surgery, Emergency/ Trauma, Women's Health and Child, Youth and Family Services. She has worked in Quality and Risk and in Human Resources –Organizational Development. She has been involved with several community boards and committees including Canadian Mental Health Association, Addiction Treatment Services Association, PREP and ACCESS. She was a member of the provincial working group for the clinical review 2008 of Child, Youth and Family Services. Joan has presented on various topics including grief and loss, team dynamics, change management and social work practice. Her areas of interest include social work competencies and education, leadership, clinical services, ethics and evaluation.

Mildred "Mit" C. Joyner, DPS, MSW, LCSW

National Associiation of Social Workers

Mit Joyner is President of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW), which has 55 chapters throughout the United States and its territories. Joyner also serves as President of the North America Region of the International Federation of Social Workers (IFSW), which includes Canada and the United States and is a member of IFSW’s Executive Committee. She serves on the boards of the NASW Foundation and the NASW Assurance Services, Inc. Her other board service included a community bank, DNBFIRST, where she was the first female and only African American to serve in this capacity and the Chester County Food Bank.

Yvonne Chase, PhD, LCSW, ACSW

Yvonne Chase is Associate Professor at the University of Alaska, Anchorage. She received her PhD from Norfolk State University and her MSW from Howard University. Her extensive leadership experience at the NASW chapter and national levels included: president of the Alaska chapter, member of the boards of NASW and the NASW Assurance Services, Inc., chair of the NASW National Committee on Inquiry and the Task Force on Professional Review; member of the NASW Foundation Gosnell Memorial Scholarship Panel and the NASW Competence Certification Commission renamed the Credentialing Committee. Currently she serves as board member & treasurer, NASW Assurance Services, Inc. Organizational affiliations include the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE), Global Alliance for Behavioral Health and Social Justice (Formerly American Orthopsychiatry Association), and editorial board for the Journal of Child Abuse & Neglect. Chase has obtained the LCSW in the State of Alaska and holds NASW’s ACSW credential.

The IFSW North American Regional International Conference

The Canadian Association of Social Workers (CASW), the National Association of Social Workers (NASW), and the International Federation of Social Workers (IFSW) are proud to present the 2023 Virtual North American Regional Conference - 

Social Work Across Borders: Canada and USA

This year's conference will focus on strengthening the social work profession across our shared border - the world's longest international border, at 8,890 km or 5524 miles. 

Canadian and US social workers will discuss various issues related to their practice. Sessions will focus on each national association's mission, challenges of working across the border, practitioners' perspectives on racism and immigration and refugee settlement, and international partnership building. 

Please note that a certificate of attendance will be emailed to all participants immediately after the conference that may be applied towards Continuing Education requirements of state licensing or provincial regulation.
