Nathaniel Pollock, Public Health Agency of Canada

Nathaniel Pollock (MSW, PhD) is an epidemiologist on the Family Violence Epidemiology Section at PHAC. Prior to his current role, Nathaniel was a social worker in mental health and child welfare, and conducted community-based research on suicide prevention. He is an adjunct professor at the School of Arctic and Subarctic Studies at the Labrador Campus of Memorial University.

Wendy Hovdestad, Public Health Agency of Canada

Wendy Hovdestad (PhD) supports the development of the Canadian Child Welfare Information System as the Team Lead for partnership building for the Family Violence Epidemiology Section.

Alexandra Ouédraogo, Public Health Agency of Canada

Alexandra Ouédraogo (MSc) is an epidemiologist on the Family Violence Epidemiology Section at PHAC. Before joining PHAC, Alexandra’s work consisted in conducting research related to environmental health and supporting the development of a data repository to facilitate data access for research. She is also a health geographer and data analyst. 

Description

In this webinar, the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) will share the results of an analysis of national data about children in out-of-home care. The data were compiled by PHAC in collaboration with provincial and territorial governments and other child welfare partners, and were derived from public and custom sources of aggregate data. The objectives of the project were to estimate the number of children in out-of-home care in Canada in 2021, and examine rates of out-of-home care by gender, age group, placement type, province/territory, and year. The webinar will provide an overview of the results, a chance to offer feedback, and a discussion about opportunities for future analyses of national child welfare data.
