Lori Pickerl, BSW, RSW

Lori Pickerl is a registered Social Worker with the Collage of Social workers in Manitoba.  In 2010 Lori graduated from the University of Manitoba with her Bachelor of Social Work.  Lori started with A & O: Support Services for Older Adults as a Social Worker in 2021.  As a full time social worker with A & O: Support Services for Older Adults Lori works in closely in the elder abuse, safe suite, counselling, and this full house programs.  Lori is a Protection Order Designate who can help client’s with applying for Protection Orders.

Katherine Nelson-Thomson, BA, BSW, RSW

Katherine Nelson is a Registered Social Worker with A & O: Support Services for Older Adults and has been with A & O for 20 years. Katherine has completed the “Option in Aging” specialization through the University of Manitoba. In her role, Katherine works in a number of A & O’s program areas including, including Elder Abuse Prevention Services, Older Victim Services, Counseling, This Full House, and the Safe Suite program. Katherine’s passion, however is in working with older adults who have experienced Elder Abuse and/or Crime Victimization. As such, Katherine is also a trained Protection Order Designate and regularly assists in the development and delivery of workshops, workbooks, videos and manuals on the topics of Elder Abuse and ways that older adults can protect themselves. Presentations in these key areas have also been developed and delivered in partnership with the National Victims of Crime Awareness Week to provide education and information to the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, as well as to newcomers participating in A & O’s Senior Immigrant Settlement Services.

Description

The abuse of older adults is a serious issue in Canada affecting up to 8.2% of older Canadians (55+) living in the community (“Into the Light: National Survey on the Mistreatment of Older Canadians”, 2015, NICE). This means up to 17,500 older Manitobans could be experiencing abuse. The abuse can be physical, emotional, financial, sexual as well as neglect. Join us for a virtual presentation on March 28th from 12-1:30 pm CT and 1-2:30pm ET!
